Abstract
The effectiveness of the “unpaired count technique” (UCT – unmatched count technique), which is widely used in foreign practice when conducting surveys on sensitive issues, is experimentally evaluated. In 2011, in Ivanovo, the author organized an experiment on the principle of a three-section split-ballot (N = 100 + 100 + 100) with subsequent use of competitive validation procedures. The effectiveness of UCT was evaluated by comparing self-reports received in response to questions about deviant behavior that were asked in a regular telephone interview and in an interview using the indirect “unpaired numbers " technique. Empirical data indicate a clear superiority of the tested technique over the traditional form of telephone interview in terms of the proportion of sincere responses, the degree of trust in the survey method, the level of subjective anonymity provided, psychological comfort of responses, etc.
