Abstract

With the help of the historical and linguistic analysis it is amplified in the article that contrary to the popular view the Сhurchillian metaphor "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma" was not originally used as a cultural and historical description of Russia. However, during the Cold War years the phrase moved far beyond the narrow historical context and in many ways departed from the original referent. It played a significant role in forging a specific political, cultural, and historical attitude towards the Soviet Union. The author suggests his own explanation why Churchill is so often misquoted ("Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma") which results in misleading translations. The author asserts that these distortions reflect certain US foreign policy attitudes to the Soviet Union.
