Abstract
This paper looks at how the concept of hope was viewed by the ancient Hebrews and how it is represented in the context of the Old Testament. The author examines three most frequently used words which express the concept of hope: tiqvah, yachal and qavah. By using hermeneutic analysis, the author arrived at the conclusion that in translating these words to Russian language, the message is often distorted. Because it is critically important that such an essential and fundamental element of Christian life as hope be understood correctly, the translator should attempt to reproduce the content of the original Hebrew words as literally as possible and accompany their translation by detailed comments.
