Abstract
One of the problems solved by N. Elias is the relationship between the individual and society. Elias was critical of both the responses of sociologists of the time to this question: Weber's individualism, which postulates man as the basis of sociological thinking, and Durkheim's holism, which considered society as a whole, supra-individual social facts, to be such a basis. Elias considers both decisions one-sided. His strategy is similar to G. Simmel, who emphasizedsomething “third”, something that is between the individual and society and a certain how it connects them. Simmel uses the expression “Wechselwirkung” to refer to the “third”; Elias speaks of figurations. The article discusses the degree of success of the Elias strategy, its inherent positive features, and the problems associated with it.
