Abstract
The article analyzes the evolution of Durkheim's theory of punishment and reveals a significant connection between the main stages of this evolution, mechanical solidarity and the centralization of power. To explain the cruelty of punishment in the United States, the concept of neo-mechanical solidarity is introduced, which contributes to the strengthening of the expressive cruelty of punishment.
