Abstract
The article analyzes the changes in approaches to the study of the family that have occurred in recent years. Among the reasons for these changes are twists in sociological theory and the impact of family transformations. The pluralization of sexual partnerships, the spread of new types of reproductive and parental behavior, and the reformatting of gender roles in Western countries have led to the need to update the methodology and new directions of family research in Europe. The article reveals changes in the research methodology families that followed the “turns” in sociological theory: from macro - to micro-approaches, from structural functionalism to constructivism, from the institutional approach to the study of family practices. New research focuses are considered: atypical families, involved fatherhood, refusal to give birth to children as a family-demographic phenomenon. The scientific discussion about the future of the family is discussed – there is an ambivalence of family processes. On the one hand, the spread of new phenomena in the family sphere, on the other – the continuity of family traditions is preserved everywhere: commitment to family values, orientation to traditional marriage, and close intergenerational ties.
