Abstract
The concept of tradition is a crucial instrument of social knowledge, socialization, power, national building and ethnic mobilization. Only in the second half of the 20th century did the social meaning and content of the term “tradition” come to be critically assessed and become the object of reflection. They have since remained among the key issues in anthropological debates. Today, the constructionist paradigm is the prevailing model in the interpretation of modern forms of the uses of tradition. But grounded in the opposition between the invented and the natural traditions, it ignores significant aspects of their social explications. The special thematic section of the journal on the “New Frameworks of Tradition and Traditionality in Russia” is aimed at the discussion of tradition as a meaningful site of social imagination and reveals a variety of contexts and instruments for approaching modern forms of tradition in Russia.
