Abstract
Presently, marriages are made among the Russian Kazakh both through matchmaking and bride abduction. The Kazakh of Povolzhie and Western Siberia kidnap the bride with her consent, and often upon the consent of her parents. Non-consensual abductions are encountered among the Altai Kazakh. This phenomenon, which had been considered a breach of the common law in the traditional society framework, today is conceived of as a national tradition in the popular imagination. The article discusses the temporal dynamics and causes of the spreading of bride kidnapping among the Kazakh of Russia.
