Abstract
The close tie between the religious and ethnic identities, as the author argues, is a characteristic trait of the religious situation in Russia. Although the correlation between the ethnic and the religious somewhat weakened in the early 1990s, the part religion played in ethnic identity was to become noticeably more important again afterwards. The issue is discussed in the article, and special attention is paid to the attitude of the Russian Orthodox Church toward the question of human rights. Since the concept of human rights in the Russian Orthodox Church differs from that in the civil legislation, the difference in views and interpretations tells on a variety of aspects of personhood and identity.
