- Abstract
- The article discusses the "Muslim" component in family and everyday life rites of the Tatar, who are the second largest ethnic group in the Russian Federation. The transformation of the "Muslim" component is traced by the author from the late 19th century, when Islam had played an important part in the traditional way of life, through the period of post-Soviet "re-islamization" in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The author argues that Soviet years, marked by religious bans and repressions, were in many ways instrumental in turning the religious component into a symbol of ethnic and cultural identity.
