Abstract
The article is an outcome of fieldwork interviews among Buddhists in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Burya-tia, and Kalmykia, which were conducted in 2003-2007. The author pays special attention to the ways the interviewees explicate contemporary phenomena, such as social, economic, and political relations, using religious and mythological explanatory frameworks. The author argues that the usage of these strategies reflects particular cultural continuities in beliefs, institutions, and statuses that are maintained by Buddhist teachings.
