- Abstract
- The regularities and factors of variability of the sexual dimorphism in the crania of 70 samples of the indigenous population of Northern and Central Asia were investigated by means of univariate and multivariate statistics. Analyses indicate that intergroup variability of the sexual dimorphism has no smaller range than variability of other morphological features of the crania. Differences in the pattern of the sexual dimorphism arise in part through differences in cranial morphology (in particular, greater size at men's means a greater degree of dimorphism), in part through a degree of uniformity of the samples. Stochastic factors are also contributing. Different growth patterns of functional regions of the crania (neurocranium, face, nasal area) are suggested as the reason for different patterns of cranial sexual dimorphism variation in each functional region. No correlation between the degree of sexual dimorphism of any part of the crania and abiogenous factors (height above sea level, amount of deposits and average temperature of January) was detected.
