- Abstract
- In 2004, in the town of Lihula in Western Estonia, a monument to "Estonians in the German Army Outfit" had lived for two weeks. Its dismantling provoked vandalism acts directed against monuments to Red Army soldiers who had died fighting in World War II. This marked the beginning of the "war of monuments" in Estonia, which eventually led to street unrest and heated debates on "symbols of Soviet occupation" that split ethnic/language groups and raised an array of important social and cultural issues. The situation is in the focus of attention in the article.
