Abstract
Kelemen Mikes, a companion of Prince Ferenc Rákóczi, spent in exile, in Turkey, about 45 years. During this time, he wrote 207 bogus letters that are a mixture of diaries, travel writing and essays; these «letters» is the first prose work of Hungarian literature. Mikes gives description of the habits and customs, expressive images of the Turks and local inhabitants; as a whole, it is a great literary essay of the life of the Ottoman Empire of the XVIII century, on the background of European history.
