Abstract
This paper presents a hoard found during excavations at Jericho conducted by the archaeological mission of the Institute of Arhaeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2010. The hoard contains 54 folles of Anastasius I, Justin I, Justinian I, Justin II and Maurice. Most of the folles were minted in Constantinople while the rest in Thessalonica, Cyzicus, Nicomedia and Antioch. The latest coin in the hoard is Maurice's follis dating from 592/593, which actually provides the terminus post quem for its deposit. The hoard belongs to the most common type of cooper hoards from sixth-century Palestine and is of great importance for the study of monetary circulation in the eastern provinces of the Byzantine Empire in the context of historical events.
