- Abstract
The East Carpathian region played an important role in European events of the Late Roman period, due to its geographical location close to the Roman provincial world. Comparative study of definitive ethnic and cultural feature complexes connected with the life and ideology of the ancient population showed that in Late Roman times the Ciscarpathian and the Transcarpathian regions were entirely separate and different cultural areas. Archeological material shows that in Ciscarpathia the time in question was a period of stable development for the population that created the Carpathian kurgan culture. Transcarpathia in the first half of the 1st millennium AD repeatedly encountered strong inflows of migrants, which changed the ethnic map of the region.
