Abstract
The paper is devoted to a special type of tools, Kostenki knives, - their technology, function and ergonomics. It is part of an extended research of the artifacts in the wider context of European Gravettian. One of the aims of this particular survey is to characterize the technological process of the specifi c technique used and to explain the great variability that this type of tool sometimes shows. The variety of the forms can be explained from the technological point of view. Kostenki knives retained their function whereas the morphology changed during exploitation. It has been proved that in the context of Kostenki-Avdeevo archeological culture tools of this type were used as real knives for cutting.
